Portrait of a Digital Weapon - Pegasus
Pegasus, developed by Israeli cyber-arms company NSO Group, is the most advanced spyware ever developed. Governments contracted with access to this cyberweapon could remotely turn any smartphone into a tool to remotely spy on anyone deemed a threat. Marketed as a tool to “fight terrorism and pedophilia,” its use has been tied to attacks on journalists and human rights advocates the world over and was directly implicated as assisting in the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.
Countries known to have accessed this tool include Azerbaijan, Egypt, India, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Panama, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the UAE, and Yemen.
